    I added Gentleman of Uncertain Fortune to my TBR after reading and really enjoying Love and Marriage in the Age of Jane Austen, also by Rory Muir. I pre-ordered your new book from Blackwell's as I can't find a copy yet in the US - congratulations on another novel!

    We just finished the miniseries a 2nd time, and I totally enjoyed it. I found the character of Mr Dorrit fascinating. At the beginning he had long since accepted his fate of living at the Marshallsea, knew his place there, in fact he said - and knew- he was respected there. But once he came into money it changed. Its like he tried to convince himself that to properly fit into this highest circle of $$ society, he had to put behind and forget everything and everyone he knew before, to the extent of treating ppl like Adam very badly. But then it changed again when he heard the whispers in his own mind how the rich ppl recognized him for who he had been before, and that he wasnt truly respected in this higher society circle - unlike the Marshallsea, where he was held in high regard. The actor who portrayed him here did a very good job of expressing these changes in the character. How unfortunate it all overwhelmed him in the end. I luv the old book version you have of this too- very cool! Major thumbs up for your channel, and Little Dorrit! :)

    Thanks. Late in the interview Amanda mentions one of her opinions is kind of "unpopular." I understand that phrase has some currency at this point in time but it still confuses me. It seems like an opinion is an opinion and popularity has no bearing on it. I don't know.

    I was wondering, Katie, why you had on this southern California girl with her open-mouth western American accent, and then I listened to her music. I get it. To my California ear it does NOT sound 1800's or at all English, but all the songs are honest to the material and all are beautiful. Anyone familiar with the novels quickly grasps that Amanda (like you) knows her Austen. I had no trouble guessing which novel inspired which song. I listened to the S&S knock off first and loved the melody but settled on the Northanger homage as the most lovely (and my favorite). My favorite book is P&P, although I consider Emma the more perfect work (go figure). Amanada's "Emma" contribution is light and simple, in keeping with the rosy place from which Jane composed the book. Persuasion is even more of a fairy tale than P&P. I fear in the REAL world the Captain would not have waited but would have married any suitable girl that would have said yes, but in Austen world, I'm glad Wentworth was constant. Well done, Amanda.

    Yes, I tear up or cry in nearly every book. I can dislike a book and still cry at scenes. It's shocking to me when people say they never cry when reading (the same is with shows or movies).

  • @KierTheScrivener
    @KierTheScrivener 2 дні тому

    I was one of the little visual imagination and a slow reader. I think I'd be a four. I often see outlines or silhouettes of a scene but there's no detail. (though this crosses words too, I have a good memory for facts but if you asked me to tell you the lyrics of my favourite song I'd be able to summarize it but I wouldn't get the words right) I don't really have different voices for people in my head, everyone ends up with a British accent something I was relentlessly teased about because often characters aren't British, my accent is not very good and I do without even noticing. But even when alone I often mouth or speak aloud every word. I see words much more clearly than scenes. And the same is true when I write, I'll end up talking aloud without noticing. I even did it with schoolwork.

    Can confirm, I read Our Mutual Friend two years ago based on Katie's recommendation and it's one of my favourite Dickens so far. Very complex plot and characters. And I can see myself wanting to reread it in the future to pick up on things I missed or forgot.

    Katie, you never cease to surprise me with creative content! The interview was absolutely brilliant. Amanda is so well spoken and answered every question you posed elegantly. She obviously possesses a keen intellect and applies her amazing talent to produce unique and enjoyable entertainment. Her spin on reading that morphs to song writing might not be singular but I’ve never encountered it before. The comment she made about being faithful to the instruments of the period in her songs demonstrates her excellence! Thank you for sharing this interview and I hope you do more.

    So excited to re-read this. It became my favourite Dickens when I read it in Phang Nga Thailand in 2014 during a particularly difficult year for me personally. I struggled to understand why it resonated so much with me & during this wonderful Dickens read along it's been usurped firstly by Bleak House & then just recently by Great Expectations. However I must admit I have a gut feeling (great expectation!) that it's going to return to the top of the pile once I've re-read it. Which will probably be in a couple of weeks because first I have to read Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, my first ever Austen as part of your Austen in July. Wicked!
